How to Tell If Your Gun Is Loaded

Knowing if your gun is loaded is crucial because you should never leave a loaded gun unoccupied or in your gun safe.

Though your gun may be locked and on display, there will be times children or thieves may break into it, which will end up with accidents and difficult situations to deal with. Or, you may be toying with a handgun without knowing if it’s loaded.

There will also be other times you come face to face with someone with a handgun, unknowing if it is loaded and if you have a chance to fight or stay safe.

Unfortunately, this is a bit difficult unless you are able to see the rounds or dismantling the gun. If you have good eyes, you can see it through the “loaded chamber indicator” in some guns.

Telling if a gun is loaded isn’t easy to do. What may be better would be to see if the gun is unloaded. You can do this through clearing the gun. Drop the magazine and open its slide, ensuring that the slide lock is engaged while doing so.

When using a revolver, open it to see the cylinder, making sure that the firearm is pointed to a safe direction and the fingers are off the trigger.

Another way to check your gun is through a press check, pulling the slide a bit back. But when handling a gun, no matter who says it’s unloaded or not, it’s best to consider it loaded until it’s proven wrong.

After all, you will never know what will happen and many accidents always have the excuse of “I didn’t know that the gun is loaded!”

Always make sure that you follow the proper gun safety habits when handling a gun, even if it’s just displaying the gun or cleaning it. Also, make sure it is out of the reach of children and safely locked in a gun safe!
